The Panthers’ Varsity basketball team had their season opener this past Saturday against Villa Walsh.

A little background: Villa Walsh beat us by 25 points two years ago and 30 points last year, so they were expecting to walk all over us. However, the Panthers came out strong this year, and lost by a much smaller margin of 45-30. Although we did not win the game, we were proud of how well we played. We dominated the first quarter; we were up 6-0 for its majority, and were still up by a basket at its end.

Villa Walsh was stunned. They started to panic and make mistakes, and we capitalized on those mistakes. Our shots were on, our defense was aggressive, and we worked together as a team. As the game went on Villa started to catch up and eventually surpassed us on the scoreboard, but never surpassed us in effort. Senior starter Emma Corazza commented on the intensity of the game, “We really started out strong and did our best at keeping the energy up throughout the entire game.” Sophomore guard Elizabeth Kilgore agreed, saying that the game “showed huge improvement on our side, as neither team lost any seniors. I am so proud of our team effort and it contributed to a great, competitive game. We really made Villa work!”

After about a month of working hard and practicing daily, the basketball team showed early signs of a successful upcoming season. Coach McCloud applauded us at the end of the game for never giving up and working hard until the end. “It’s just the little things that need some work, which will come with more time and practice.” Junior guard Claire McVicar perfectly captured the excitement about our promising start. “It was such a well-fought game. Our players left it all on the court. I really could not have asked for a better start to the season!”
